An Introduction to Diesel Heaters - Are they right for you?
An Introduction to Diesel Heaters - Are they right for you?
In this video I show how my HCalory diesel heaters works and how they run, the startup and shutdown procedures.
I'll show you the temperatures we got as well.
I did make one mistake and forgot to include the electrical demand on startup.
On startup the glow plug does put some demand on the electrical system, it fluctuated between 5 watts and 161 watts at max. This warmup procedure lasts a few minutes (depends on ambient temperature) and is something you will want to account for.
Overall there isnt much to them and you should definitely consider them for your own adventures.

    Thanks for the video man. I just installed this bumper on my JT sport with a smittybuilt winch and installed the factory fog lights. You just have to do some trimming around the plastic and drill a couple of holes to make them line up with the bracket but mines went together pretty good after that. Everyone said only the led dogs would work but I did not want to buy new lights as I replaced the bulb itself with led bulbs so they are pretty bright. Thanks for taking an interest in this and providing some information to people who may not have ever even been to Utah. One thing to bear in mind when they mention OHV use. We're talking about off highway vehicles like quads and side by sides. This group has a hard-on for irresponsible OHV travel off of designated routes and pretty much going wherever they want. I'm pretty sure this will be less impactful to those who drive licensed vehicles not considered to be off highway vehicles. It seems to me they're targeting a particular group of users in vehicles that would not normally be used or licensed for highways and other state or local routes. If you find out differently, I'd love to know. Thanks for sharing.

    • @RavensEyeOffroad

      What I believe they are doing is just incrimentalism. Side by sides are the easiest low hanging fruit. From folks I have talked to who have dealt with SUWA for decades (and their lawyers) tell me their goal is anything wheels banned then anything with feet. This is why they also are restricting cattle grazing. SUWA's own little saying is "access not excess". Meaning they want it severely limited. I think the side by side stuff is just a way to get their foot in the door with all this.

    Sorry, you brought it on yourself. I started going there in the late 60’s. Most of the motorized were old Jeeps meandering around, staying on established roads and trails. Beginning with Jeep rental explosion in the 90’s, you could see where it was headed. Then add the side by sides by the 100’s, rented by people with no clue about tread lightly and cleaning up after yourself. They run wide open in most cases cutting across corners and making new trails. Jeeps and 4x4’s especially have to look out for them as they come around blind curves and over blind hills on the wrong side of the road. I haven’t been to Moab in 3 years because dodging the bastards has become too much. So you can say it has nothing to do with the rental industry all you want, but the truth is they are the trigger behind all this. Side by sides rut out the trails causing erosion. Cameras are everywhere these days and the rental industry has given plenty of evidence for these closure people to use. It’s not just Moab, Silverton, Ouray, and dozens more are affected by the runaway rental businesses. Media has played a big part with all the coverage of side by sides in print and online. So keep on defending the side by sides and rentals, it’ll come back to haunt you in the end.

    • @RavensEyeOffroad
      @RavensEyeOffroad 8 місяців тому

      Well I appreciate the perspective but I disagree. I've seen plenty of information about why they are thing to get things closed and it isn't about sxs's. It's about complete control over these areas to a point where nobody will be allowed there.

      Also, go sit out on the upper end of Sand Flat Road and watch the side by sides go by. Observe how many are wide open sideways on the wrong side of the road in a blind curve. I’ve seen them fly through that narrow spot where the road is one lane between rocks with more than one having to make last second move to keep from hitting head on.

      @@davidcrumpler5714 Look I am not here to make enemies. The issue I have with your statements are that they seem to be lumping every offroader into the same category. There are tons of people who just simply dont know how to act, its everywhere and in any outdoor activity, indoor activity. Society has been losing its ability to behave for a while now. You can watch any police interaction video, people fighting in restaurants over dipping sauce. But we don't punish all of society because of it. Its clear you have a great disdain for side by sides, probably some of it justified, but that isn't fair towards everyone else, its not fair towards those in that community who do their best to be courteous and also care about treading lightly. We cant paint with such a broad brush is what I am getting at. Instead lets work together and support those folks who want to keep things accessible to everyone and lets try and educate those who aren't exactly playing nice. Does that sound reasonable?

    • @davidcrumpler5714
      @davidcrumpler5714 8 місяців тому

      I haven’t implied off-roaders at all. Obviously you’re not paying attention. I think people that could have made a difference sat back and let it get out of hand. Now I’m afraid it’s gone too far. I hate to say this but maybe a failing economy and the BLM stepping forward and banning ATV’s will provide some relief. All my comments have been directed toward the rental business owners and the powers that be giving them permits to operate these businesses. I think side by sides were inspired by the early rock buggies. Add to that Fred Williams having the monthly section dedicated to ATV’s in 4WD certainly didn’t help. I wrote to him at that time, I felt his actions were misguided. Pretty sure he was fulfilling an assignment because it seemed out of character for his typical work. I’m sure there were financial benefits to the publisher for him to “test and review”. Genuine off-roaders, while there are some bad apples, are appreciative of the land and the opportunities given them. Do I think EJS, the Full Size Invasion and other special events can be a problem, certainly. But they are well managed and tend to clean up after themselves protecting their reputation. The rental companies take the money, turn you loose, hope they don’t end up in litigation and never once think about the trails and the damage done. If you want me to place blame, I lay it directly at the feet of local government and the rental companies. Originally rentals had to be delivered to trail heads. Then the lobbying began with manufacturers and local governments to make them street “ legal”. Hopefully I’ve clarified my position.

      I think you and I agree on more than we disagree. I think you have valid points and I get where you are coming from. I want you to keep in mind I dont live in Utah. I live in Kentucky. So I dont know all the ins and outs. But I also am looking at who is pushing what and I dont feel that SUWA is going to stop at atv or SxS's. I feel this is just a divide and conquer tactic. Would you agree with that? @@davidcrumpler5714

    You need to look up the head of the BLM Tracey Stone Manning. Utah Senator Lee called her a eco terrorist during her confirmation hearings. He also said she wanted to close lands for public use. This is the consequences of people not paying attention when people like her a nominated for these offices. You can watch her confirmation hearings, she done many crazy things over the years.

    When the tread lightly and leave no trace mentality is common or even universal you can have free reign on my land. Also the BLM is becoming considerate to the values of indigenous peoples. How many traces of them do you see. They lived on the lands you are losing for hundreds of years. TAKE THE HINT

    One bad patch spoils it for the whole. I have been to Moab many times and even from the road the North side of Moab is over run with side by sides hauling ass down the ditches along the road, cutting across the hwy and making new trails all over the place. Very different different than the street going Jeeps and rock crawling machines that made Moab the off road capital of the world to begin with. Not that some of them are not nuisances, as well. Don’t blame the horse riders, hikers, and bikers wanting a quiet safe place to enjoy the “nature” of the area.

    The wind on that island is no joke. It was windy pretty much the entire @week or more that we were there about 17 yrs ago. My ex and I had an Armadillo tent (family tent made by Walrus - they produced very well made tents for extreme conditions). We did stake down the tent as best we could and brought coolers etc to place at corners to help hold things down. The last day we were there, a big storm was building but we got out before real bad. Tent was billowing around the coolers. Packing up was absolutely nuts and if it were a cheap tent, I'm sure poles would have broken. DO NOT go there with a cheap, shock corded walmart special. After the divorce, my ex borrowed the Armadillo for a return trip and the tent did not survive - really wish I could've gotten it back to replace poles, though. He had to weather a bad storm. He ended up sleeping in his truck with nothing but peanut butter sandwiches to eat because he couldn't get out to cook. Most of what you see on that island are fishermen camping in truck campers. Definitely more sensible than tent camping in those conditions - mainly that if you're gonna be there for a week and there's an exceptionally windy day, you can relax inside, still cook, etc. Best bug prevention on the island: stay in the wind where the bugs can't fly.

      I agree that’s a hassle. Also seems like the pole could fall out if the wind bounces the awning up… how strong is the frame? Could it support snow without the poles? Also looks like there’s a big gap between the tent and awning at the back of the truck. Is that gap bigger than the OSV?

      no chance of the pole falling out at all. it has that long pin that fits inside the arm you raise the pole up so it has tension. there is a huge gap but thats because of my personal setup situation. I could not raise the awning higher because it will hit my rtt when open. since it was lower i couldnt move it forward or id not be able to open the door thus the gap at the back. Hope that makes sense! :) @@timshapleyadventures
